Things you can't touch [QT 5.9 MB]

Videos about touch

I shot this series of three videos over an 18 hour period as part of my qualifying exams for my PhD at the MIT Media Lab. The videos were for the "contextual" part of the exam, which was administered by Professor John Maeda.

My work at the Media Lab involves computer interfaces based on physical objects. One of the things these videos show is that the vocabulary of physical objects in the everyday world is vast compared to that used in computer interfaces.

If computer interfaces could embrace this larger vocabulary, maybe they could be more effective, more enjoyable and less boring. For example: interfaces that get "broken in" over time, like leather. Or, interfaces that use the texture of physical objects to convey information.
